Flint Hills Distressed
The Flint Hills are a range of hills in Kansas named for the abundant flint rock found through out them. It is one of the last tallgrass prairies in North America. I am lucky enough to live in the heart of the Flint Hills, and I have spent many hours exploring them on my bicycle and in my Jeep. Watching a sunset in the Flint Hills is an experience second to none. However, if you look closely, you will find that humans have left their mark in more ways than one. Along the sides of the roads carved through these hills you can find an abundance of trash, carelessly thrown aside. Recently, I spent a day collecting trash as I explored. In this book is a very small sampling of what I found juxtaposed with a few photographs I have shot over the years displaying the breathtaking views of the hills. Taken out of context, each of these trash compositions hold their own beauty, but considering where the materials were found, it is disappointing that we would treat this great natural resource in such a disrespectful way. If you ever get a chance to visit the Flint Hills, please take the time to leave it better than you found it.
